1. Our Stance on Protection of Personal Information

As a think tank that produces economic forecasts and creates and proposes policy recommendations and new business solutions, Hitachi Research Institute (HRI) handles various types of information, including our own technical information and personal information provided by customers. For this reason, we have established an information management system and implemented it thoroughly in order to safeguard the value of the information.

Under these circumstances, and together with stipulating regulations and establishing the management system for personal information, we have prescribed a Privacy Policy as detailed below. Our corporate officers and staff are familiar with the policy and are committed to properly protecting your personal information in accordance with the policy.

2. Definition of Personal Information

At HRI, "Personal Information" means any information concerning an individual that can be used to identify the specific individual, such as name, birth date, or other descriptive information, or numbers, symbols, or other marks assigned to an individual, or images or voice recordings (including information that cannot be used by itself to identify an individual but can be easily collated with other information to identify a specific individual). Moreover, personal information includes not only information that can be used to identify an individual, but also includes all information that reveals facts, judgments, or evaluations concerning attributes such as individuals’ physical characteristics, financial assets, job, or title, etc.

HRI pays the utmost attention and exerts maximum effort to protect and manage personal information, based on the Specifics of "Privacy Policy" below.

3. Scope of Application

This "Privacy Policy" prescribes our company’s method of handling of the personal information of our customers.

4. Specifics of Privacy Policy

  1. Preparation of and Continual Improvement of Regulations for Management of Personal Information
    HRI ensures that its officers and staff are aware of the importance of protecting personal information. HRI prepares regulations for the management of personal information so that personal information is used properly and protected, and HRI strictly enforces these regulations. Furthermore, the regulations are maintained and continually improved.
  2. Collection, Usage, and Transfer of Personal Information
    With consideration for the fact that customers provide us with their information for business purposes, HRI properly handles personal information when collecting, using, and transferring it, in accordance with the prescribed regulations, together with establishing a management system for protection of personal information as appropriate for each type of business.
  3. Implementation of Safety Measures
    To ensure that personal information remains accurate and secure, HRI works to prevent loss, destruction, alteration, or leakage, etc., by following the regulations on information security and by implementing measures to control access to personal information, to limit methods of carrying away personal information, and to prevent unauthorized access from external sources.
  4. Observance of Laws and Standards
    When handling personal information, HRI observes the laws and other standards that apply to the protection of the given personal information. Moreover, our company’s regulations concerning the management of personal information conform to laws and other applicable standards.
  5. Respect for Your Rights Regarding Your Personal Information
    When you request us to disclose, amend, or delete your personal information, or when you refuse to allow usage of or refuse to provide your personal information, we respect your rights regarding your personal information, and we respond in good faith to accommodate your requests.

5. Purpose of Collection and Usage of Information; Disclosure to Third Parties

  1. HRI collects and uses personal information for business activities, primarily involving study and research, only to the extent necessary for achieving the following purposes. When personal information is provided by customers, we clearly state the purpose of collecting and using the information beforehand, and we receive the customers’ consent.
    1. Performance of contracts concluded between the customer and HRI
    2. Contact with the customer for business talks and consultations
    3. Sending of notifications concerning events
    4. Provision of various membership services
    5. Responses to inquiries
    6. Analysis for the purpose of improving products and services based on questionnaires
    7. Transfer of personal information to the relevant Hitachi Group companies when carrying out collaborative business activities with said companies
  2. HRI will not disclose your personal information to a third party without your prior consent, except for the following cases.
    1. When the law requires or authorizes us to do so
    2. When it is necessary to preserve human life, physical safety, or financial assets but there is difficulty in securing the customer’s consent
    3. When it is particularly necessary to improve public health or to promote the healthy growth of children, but there is difficulty in securing the customer’s consent
    4. When it is necessary to cooperate with work decided by law and executed by national agencies, regional public bodies, or their consignees and when securing the customer’s consent may hinder the execution of the given work
    5. When we consign the handling of personal information out of necessity to achieve the objectives for which the information was collected and is to be used
    6. When personal information is transferred accompanying the succession of business due to merger or other reasons

6. Usage of Cookies and Web Beacons

8. Request to Customers

  1. There are both required and optional items among the personal information to be provided by customers.
    Required items are necessary in order to respond to customer inquiries and to send materials to customers.
    However, please note that if customers do not provide some optional items, we may only be able to provide limited information and services.
  2. HRI bears no responsibility for the security of personal information on other websites linked to our website.
  3. When you enter personal information on our website, your agreement with this Privacy Policy is required. In the event that you do not agree with this Privacy Policy, you may be unable to use the services offered by HRI (including responses by HRI to your inquiries). In the event that personal information is entered by a person age 15 or under, please secure the consent of a parent or guardian first.

9. Important Information

  1. Our company’s policy on the protection of personal information is based on Japanese law.
  2. Our company may revise this Privacy Policy accompanying improvements in the handling of personal information or changes in the law or other applicable standards.
