Focusing on the East Asian economic zone, this study examines what impact global environmental change (Climate Change) will have on this economic area in 2020. The possible influence of four hypothetical scenarios of climate change is discussed with respect to four aspects; (1) changes in the business environment, (2) changes in the status of food and water resources, (3) migratory movements, and (4) the role of East Asia. In our reports, we mention the sense of balance that Japanese companies should have as "Asian companies."

Focus

  • Impact of climate change on the East Asian economic system
  • Changes in the food and water resources situation
  • Incidence of migratory movements
  • Consideration of East Asia via China

Climate change has been discussed as if it were a phenomenon that will occur in the next generation, but a Pentagon Report released in 2003 warns that drastic climate change will occur by 2020. When it comes to climate change, "global warming" has generally been the focus of attention, and there has been little discussion of the fact that, at some point, there may be shift to "cooling."
This report is not designed to examine climate change itself but rather to assess its influences on the social system under the scenarios of the climate change envisioned by leading scientists.
